About the Temple
Built along the banks of the Bahuda River, Kanipakam is famous for its self-manifested (Swayambhu) idol of Lord Ganesha, which is uniquely enshrined inside a well filled with water that never dries up. According to local legend, the idol emerged from a well during a dispute between three disabled brothers, and its size is traditionally believed to be growing over time. The temple received extensive structural additions from the Chola king Kulothunga Chola I in the 11th century.
