About the Temple
A magnificent specimen of Vijayanagara architecture, the Vontimitta Kodandarama Swamy temple dates back to the 16th century. It features expansive open-air courtyards, high gopurams, and beautifully sculpted monolithic pillars. Esteemed poet Bammera Potana is said to have translated parts of the Bhagavata Purana here. Even the great traveller Jean-Baptiste Tavernier recorded its architectural grandeur in his 17th-century travelogues.
